As we’re all aware, first impressions are important, vital even. They are known for opening and closing doors, creating new opportunities and occasionally crushing expectations. So, it is a good thing that Sunset Circus got their debut release right.

As we’re all aware, first impressions are important, vital even. They are known for opening and closing doors, creating new opportunities and occasionally crushing expectations. So, it is a good thing that Sunset Circus got their debut release right.

The Melbourne-based ‘heavy’ pop/rock outfit are said to have combined their collective influences, which range from Counting Crows, Meshuggah and Coldplay, to produce this generous six-track EP. And the result: a perfectly balanced melting pot of sounds that is very pleasant on the ear.

Opening with the somewhat feel-good track, Supercollider, the self-titled effort immediately finds its feet. Light, fun and some may say playful, the classic pop/rock tune quickly has you tapping along and showcases frontman Frosty’s voice – a voice which contains a certain quality that captivates with its originality.

Next up is Sweet Sixteen, a catchy pop ditty about young love that has all the boppyness you could possibly ask for, before Red + Blue + White slows things down a little bit. The pop ballad of sorts shines with vocals which are thankfully not over-dubbed.

Diverging slightly from the realms of classic pop, tracks four and five offer a colourful change of pace. Beginning with delicately sung lyrics and soft keys, Seven Seconds demonstrates Frosty’s vocal diversity before bursting into an up-tempo gem, while Fireaway delivers something a bit heavier with in your face guitar riffs and soaring vocals to match.

To cap it all off, closer And You Take is more of your quintessential pop song about love and heartache. Slower-paced and sung with emotion, it adds another dose of something different to this flavourful EP.

First impressions are important, and Sunset Circus have definitely made a good one – the type which opens, not closes, doors. It is very easy to fall in deep ‘like’ with this EP and it is one that instantly makes the iPod playlist.
