Contractor Terra Verde has moved onto the Suburban Rail Loop Burwood station site to prepare for tunnelling works.
Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop Harriet Shing announced today that major Suburban Rail Loop construction is underway at the Burwood station location, with tunnelling on the northern section set to kick off next year connecting Burwood and Box Hill.
A 19-metre-deep launch shaft has been built on site to support the tunnelling operation. Four Tunnel Boring Machines will launch from Burwood next year, two heading towards Glen Waverley and two towards Box Hill. Following the relocation of underground services to accommodate the twin tunnels, Terra Verde will now focus on building infrastructure to support tunnelling works and constructing the station box for the new underground station.

Burwood station will bring a train connection to Deakin University for the first time, making it faster and easier for tens of thousands of staff and students to access the campus daily. Integration with local tram and bus services will connect more people within walking distance of jobs, housing, health and education facilities.
Travel times will change significantly once the SRL Burwood station opens. A student from Laverton will reach Deakin University in 60 minutes using the new Suburban Rail Loop, compared to up to 79 minutes by car. Meanwhile, a lecturer living in Frankston will slash 26 minutes off their trip to Deakin University, travelling on a level crossing-free line before connecting to the Suburban Rail Loop.
