Sometimes the best albums are born in unexpected places, and Steve Lane proves it perfectly.
Award-winning songwriter Steve Lane is launching his new album Where the Rivers Meet with a special matinee show at Brunswick Ballroom on 11 October.
This marks the first Australian gig for Steve Lane and The Autocrats since their successful UK tour in 2023, bringing their Scotland-recorded sounds back home to Melbourne.

The album has quite the backstory, with its genesis in an Ayrshire studio featuring local legends John and Stephen Douglas from Glasgow band The Trashcan Sinatras. Scottish label Last Night from Glasgow is handling the release, while the recording became a family affair with involvement from Steve’s children Kai and Neneh. The real ace up the sleeve was producer Darren Seltmann, the four-time ARIA award winner who co-founded The Avalanches and co-produced their acclaimed debut Since I Left You.
Long-term drummer David Williams from Augie March and Fanning Dempsey National Park provides the steady backbone for the new material. Melbourne singer-songwriter James Franklin joins the celebration as special guest for the launch show. As an added bonus, there’ll be a Where the Rivers Meet art exhibition featuring album artwork and sculptures by local artist Darcy Shilton, inspired by the opening track A Song You Can’t Write No More. The exhibition takes place in the Artists Bar downstairs after the main show.
The venue opens at 1pm with the kitchen serving their main menu, and the show kicks off at 2pm. Multiple ticket options are available including general admission and premium packages with reserved seating and meals.
