Spectrum, Ariel and Murtceps: Mike Rudd is playing songs from all his legendary bands

Words by staff writer

The man behind one of Australia's most enduring hits is heading to the Kindred Bandroom.

Mike Rudd’s Indelibles are set to take over Yarraville’s Kindred Bandroom for an afternoon session celebrating some of the finest moments in Australian rock history. If the name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, the song certainly will: Rudd is the voice behind Spectrum’s I’ll Be Gone, the 1971 hit that sat at number one while rubbing shoulders with Daddy Cool’s Eagle Rock and Chain’s Black & Blue.

The Indelibles’ setlist pulls from across Rudd’s considerable back catalogue, spanning his work with Spectrum, Ariel and The Indelible Murtceps. Expect the essential Spectrum tracks like Fly Without its Wings (recently covered by Stephen Cummings) and the gloriously titled What the World Needs is a New Pair of Socks, alongside Ariel’s Jamaican Farewell and cuts from the Murtceps’ wonderfully named Warts Up Your Nose album.

The early 70s were a golden period for Australian rock, with homegrown acts finally breaking through on a national scale. Spectrum’s I’ll Be Gone (Someday I’ll Have Money) charted alongside Billy Thorpe’s Most People I Know and Madder Lake’s 12lb Toothbrush, cementing an era when Australian bands weren’t just competing with international acts but genuinely rivalling them. Rudd was right at the centre of it all.

Beyond the classics, the band will be throwing in some blues numbers designed to get people moving, alongside newer material from Rudd’s Breathing Space series of EPs. It’s proof that Rudd hasn’t stopped writing, even after five decades in the game.

The afternoon session kicks off with doors at 2pm, and seating is available for those who’d rather take it easy. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
