Sounds of Sirus

Sounds Of Sirus have been around for approximately four years, and listening to their recently released EP Singularity , it’s easy to see why they’re being touted as heirs to the throne in the Aussie alternative rock scene. The sound is slick and powerful, and the songs are dark but accessible. They recently returned from a national tour in support of the EP, and guitarist Rory Bond spoke recently about the ambiguous nature of their first real tour.

“The tour was very, very hard, and very awesome!” he laughs. “It was one of those things that was like a double edged sword, we did lots of driving, lots of partying, lots of gigs. We had a few dramas on the way up. The first couple of days was rough, and the shows weren’t great, but we just had to do it. We play sold out shows in Melbourne, but in Sydney and stuff, we were like the first bands on, so there wasn’t a lot of people there. But we were having people coming up straight away. We were handing out CDs flat out, so the people that saw us were digging it.”

The band finish the tour with a home town show at the Evelyn, and they’re very much looking forward to playing in front of a large and appreciative crowd in Melbourne again. “Yeah, that’s going to be a good show,” he enthuses. “We’ve got a lot of really good bands on too that we’re really happy to play with, because we haven’t really chosen all the bands to support us in the past. This show that we’ve organised we’ve picked all the bands, and we’re so set on playing with all these guys. They’re such good guys and good bands, I think this will be the best show we’ve done, for sure.”

The Sounds Of Sirus live set is all about energy, musicianship and good songs, and punters who enjoy these things in a live band are urged to head down to The Evelyn that night and check this up and coming band out. “We’ve always had a high energy show,” he describes, “we don’t just sort of stand there and play. And we’re a pretty tight band as well. Our live shows tend to get a bit crazy, and the music’s really good too. People have always said we’re better live than on our CDs.”

Beyond the Evelyn show, the band have a brand new record well underway, and more touring planned for the rest of this year and well into next, to ensure that their band’s name is kept on the lips of alternative rock punters in Melbourne and Australia wide.

“Well, we’re about three or four songs in to writing our next release,” he reveals, “and we’ll be releasing something again next year. We’ve got a bunch more shows towards the end of the year, we’re just going to continue to play shows and make some money and we’ll just make money for the next release. Just keep pushing our CD for as long as possible until we go back into the studio.

“We’ve had our first release, and it’s going really well,” he says, regarding the longer term future of the band, “we’ve seen ourselves grow from when we started and didn’t have a release to now. I guess that the idea now is to keep putting out stuff, and just keep growing and getting bigger. We want to tour and play bigger gigs, and try and get over to the States and over in Europe. One of the things I really want to do is get on a tour, like a main support tour with a band like Cog or Karnivool or something like that. That’s something that I’d really like to do, but that’s a mountain away.”

Possibly not quite that long, considering these guys’ sound and ambition.

Sounds Of Sirus play the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy on Saturday August 20 alongside Skylion, Goodbye Zoe and Who Invited the Wolf.
