APRA AMCOS has today revealed the nominees for the 2024 APRA Music Awards, with an outstanding list of songwriters across pop, rock, country, R&B, hip hop, rap, soul, blues & roots, dance, and a brand-new category representing hard rock and heavy metal artists.
Leading with three nominations is LA-based songwriting prodigy Sarah Aarons, who appears in Most Performed Australian Work, Most Performed Pop Work, and the Peer-Voted APRA Song of the Year with Therapy (co-written with Ajay Bhattacharyya) performed by Budjerah.
Joining Sarah in the APRA Song of the Year category is previous winner Paul Kelly and the late David McComb for If Not Now, and powerhouse songwriter Angie McMahon who appears with Letting Go. Troye Sivan makes his first appearance in the final five for Rush (with co-writer Styalz Fuego) while G Flip and co-writer Aidan Hogg get the thumbs up from APRA members for The Worst Person Alive.

Emerging Songwriter of the Year
The Emerging Songwriter of the Year category features a strong list of ones-to-watch making their APRA Music Awards debut. 2022 APRA Professional Development Award winner, Beckah Amani is recognised for her soulful folk-pop tunes, while rising indie star grentperez is nominated for his multi-genre pop. Off the back of three EPs and their debut album is guitar pop duo Royel Otis, alongside exciting punk rock outfit Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Rounding out the category is songwriting chameleon MAY-A, whose vocals were featured on the 2023 APRA Song of the Year, Say Nothing (written by Flume and Sarah Aarons).
Triple and dual nominees lead the field
MAY-A is a dual nominee in 2024, also making a showing in Most Performed Alternative Work with Sweat You Out My System (co-written with two-time nominee Robby De Sa).
Appearing in both Most Performed Pop Work and Most Performed Australian Work is Amy Shark (Only Wanna Be With You), Dean Lewis (How Do I Say Goodbye), The Kid LAROI (LOVE AGAIN), along with Budjerah and co-writer Ainslie Wills (Ready for The Sky). Back with their second nomination is Troye Sivan and Styalz Fuego, getting the nod for You Know What I Need (PNAU & Troye Sivan) in Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work.
Their co-composer, Sam Littlemore also lands in Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work on the track Spend It (Peking Duk ft. Circa Waves). Finally, Golden Guitar winner James Johnston has two songs nominated for Most Performed Country Work – Got It Good (with dual nominees Michael Delorenzis and Michael Paynter) and Same Songs.

Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Work
The inaugural Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Work category features five of Australia’s finest songwriters in the genre. Melbourne-based metal outfit Alpha Wolf land on the list with 60cm of Steel (featuring Welsh band Holding Absence) from their split EP, The Lost & The Longing.
Metal heavyweights Parkway Drive are nominated with Darker Still, the title track from their seventh album of the same name. Shapeshifters King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard appear with their almost 10-minute-long grimy metal song Dragon, while Sydney metalcore outfit Polaris get a nod with their fierce track Inhumane from their third album Fatalism.
Rounding out the category is metalcore trailblazers The Amity Affliction with It’s Hell Down Here, a song that addresses the topic of mortality.
First-time nominees
First-time nominees include Tex Perkins, The Buoys, Frank Sultana, Alan Boyle and Christian Harvey (pka Blues Arcadia), Ian Moss, Dean Brady, Kaylee Bell, Skin on Skin, Forest Claudette, Elliott Hammond, Jack Madin and Edward Service (the electro duo Shouse), Jordan Samatua, Parkway Drive, The Amity Affliction, Polaris, Alpha Wolf and more.
Dominating the Most Performed International Work are global songwriting heavyweights Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, and David Guetta.
The 2024 APRA Music Awards will be held on Wednesday 1 May at ICC Sydney, Gadigal land with host Tom Gleeson, and guest presenters Jen Cloher and Bumpy. Brand new Musical Director Julian Hamilton will mix and match music collaborators who will put their spin on the five nominated Peer-Voted APRA Song of the Year compositions.
