THE AFROBIOTICS – KINDRED STUDIOS
Kindred Studios is showcasing some of Melbourne’s finest in Afrobeat, funk, gospel and Congolese rumba. Jerusalem Gospel Rumba is a ten-piece live band that sets itself apart with its deep Congolese gospel vocals and rumba rhythms. The Afrobiotics are a six-piece Melbourne based band that breathe new life into the sound of West Africa and bring a powerful message of resistance to the next generation of Afro-beat.
CHARLES JENKINS & THE ZHIVAGOS – THE SPOTTED MALLARD
Charles Jenkins & The Zhivagos have announce a special show in celebration of SLAM Day 2013 on Saturday. Joining them on the night will be special guests The Suzannah Espie Trio, consisting of Suzannah Espie, Liz Stringer and Grant Cummerford, as well as Ben Salter from Brisbane folk-rock collective The Gin Club. Expect collaborations all night long at The Spotted Mallard from 8.30pm. Entry is $20.
HIGH VOLTAGE – CHERRY BAR
On SLAM Day, High Voltage will be holding an AC/DC tribute show as the day will mark the 33rd anniversary of the passing of Australian rock legend and lead singer of the one and only AC/DC Bon Scott. The night will also feature performances from Electric (The Cult Show) and classic rock covers band Jaded Cats, and DJs Adalita and Mary M will be taking over at 10pm. It all goes down at Cherry Bar. Entry will be $15 from 8pm and $10 from 11-5am.
SHERIFF – WRANGLER STUDIOS
As SLAM Day hits Australia once again, the boys from psychedelic blues/rock band Sheriff are to hold the Wild Wild West Footscray Warehouse Party at Wrangler Studios on Saturday February 23. They will be joined by ’70s inspired blues rockers Cotangent, the Sydney lads Bonez and The Steins. There is also to be a late night electro set from Solaires. The night is cowboy/cowgirl themed so don’t hold back on the outrageous costumes. BYO booze, saloon doors open at 7.30pm and entry is $10.
MARTIN MARTINI & THE BONE PALACE ORCHESTRA – BAR OPEN
Fitzroy’s legendary cult band rise from their deathbed for two shows only to celebrate SLAM Day at Bar Open on Saturday February 23 (and Sunday February 24). They’ll be playing the old songs the old way. You thought you’d be lucky to get in – so be lucky. It will be like a knife fight in a telephone booth. Free entry both nights.
SPITFIRE – THE RETREAT
It’s a huge night at The Retreat Hotel for SLAM celebrations this Saturday February 23 as Sydney’s favourite indie terrorists, Spitfire, return to Melbourne to launch their new single Radio Control from their debut album, Songs From The Debt Generation. Joining them at The Retreat are Melbourne’s favourite sons, The Sons Of Lee Marvin. Garage-gonzo rock’n’roll stalwarts that they are, they will be returning to the scene of their Cutthroats & Conjurers album launch last September. It’ll be chaotic, it’ll be SLAM worthy. Music kicks off at 10pm. Free entry.
MIKELANGELO & THE TIN STAR – YAH YAH’S
Following their sell out Northcote Beach Party show, Mikelangelo & The Tin Star go back to the beach for SLAM Day at Yah Yah’s on Saturday. Special guests include the sweet and sultry St Clare, theremin from outer space with Miles Brown, wide screen Americana tales with Dan Waters and death defying rock’n’roll with the Stu Thomas Paradox. Kicking off at 9pm, it’s set to be a wild show and if you’re still hungry for more, Mikelangelo & The Tin Star will also play a 2.30am-4.30am show the same night at the Famous Spiegeltent as part of Melbourne’s very first White Night.
THE SPIN – THE VIC HOTEL
Melbourne rock band The Spin pride themselves on making music with a touch of warm and fuzzy soul and above all, a little bit ‘o love. Drawing from the influence of the British pop movement among other genres, their style is characterised by their upbeat tunes while also performing the occasional track peppered with some dark, moody rock’n’roll. The Spin are to play at The Victoria Hotel this Saturday February 23 with the support of Melbourne indie rock collective Cider Tree Kids from 10pm. Free entry.
MAJOR TOM & THE ATOMS – THE POST OFFICE HOTEL
Major Tom And The Atoms take their cues and clues from the greats of yesteryear – John Lee Hooker, Dr John, The Doors, The Stones, The Bad Seeds, Joe Cocker, Sergeant Pepper, The Blues Brothers and more… concocting a strange brew of funky-tonk blues, spy-chedelic shoot-out tunes and howlin’ growlin’ jungle grooves. They play two SLAMmin’ sets from 9.30pmat The Post Office Hotel this Saturday.
ROSS MCLENNAN – THE FAMOUS SPIEGELTENT
Mistletone is proud to present Ross McLennan’s eagerly awaited third solo album, The Night’s Deeds Are Vapour. SLAM Day ambassadors The Smith Street Band are still kicking along on their Young Drunks tour which includes a show at The Reverence this Saturday for SLAM Day (plus a just-announced all ages show at the Phoenix Youth Centre pm Sunday February 24 with door sales only). The Rev show is sold out.
THE SEMINAL RATS – THE GASOMETER
The Seminal Rats are one of the longest standing post-Birdman bands this country has produced. Formed in 1983 they are still blasting out high energy punk rock, 30 years later. They are joined by Fortress Of Narzod who are launching their Power In The Hands Of Fools EP. Featuring veteran members of Melbourne’s punk/rock scene they combine early ’70s hard rock with ’70s punk and filter the concoction through a stoner rock lens. Earplugs may be necessary at The Gaso this Saturday for a 3pm matinee show.
MINIBIKES – THE GRACE DARLING
