A mesmerising journey
In a dream-like sequence, audiences follow the passionate young dressmaker from her sewing machine in Melbourne to the vibrant streets of Paris. The story begins in Lady Shimmery’s studio, filled with early memories of tailored suits, wedding dresses, and dreams of something more. Her adventure to Paris ignites her passion for the art of burlesque, leading to breathtaking performances featuring a cast of twenty adorned in stunning costumes of rhinestones, feathers, and tassels.
“The essence of Burlesque is captured through a blend of glamour, cheekiness, drama, playfulness, and hilarity,” said Holly Mouat, the show’s writer and director. “We aim to create an unforgettable theatrical experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.”
A female-driven production
Shimmery Burlesque features a female-led team, with Holly Mouat drawing inspiration from her mother, Kerrie Schultz (the real Lady Shimmery), who serves as the head costume designer. Cabaret singer Abbey Paige Williams stars as Lady Shimmery, supported by a talented Australian Burlesque ensemble. The choreography is crafted by Maple Rose and Kimera Diamond, with lighting design by award-winning Jason Bovaird.
Kerrie Schultz’s journey began in graphic design before she ventured into fashion and bridal couture. A trip to Paris in 2010, inspired by her award-winning paintings, ignited a passion for Burlesque in both her and Holly. Holly began performing burlesque in 2016, with her mother creating all of her costumes, leading to the establishment of Shimmery Couture.
Shimmery Burlesque arrives at the Athenaeum Theatre from November 29 to December 1, 2024. Tickets start at $89.00 and are available through Ticketmaster.
