The much-loved outdoor theatre event returns this summer with a modern take on classic Shakespearean tales.

Grab your picnic blankets, because one of Melbourne’s favourite theatrical event is back this summer. At Shakespeare Under the Stars, the age-old stories get a modern twist. Viewers can enjoy the shows from the lush Southern Cross Lawn at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

The Australian Shakespeare Company will open the season with a playful rendition of the rom-com classic, Much Ado About Nothing. Following the tale of two entangled love stories, the show is jam-packed with pop and rock music, making for an energetic and raucous romp.  Running from February 23 to March 17, there are plenty of chances to catch a show.

Later in the year, A Midsummer Night’s Dream will grace the stage. Audiences can experience the classic folly like never before, as the tale of fairies and fools unfolds in a hilarious and mystical way.  

The award-winning Shakespeare Under the Stars series has been running since 1987. Over the years, the company has toured across cities and rural towns in Australia, bringing some of the country’s strongest performances to a wide range of audiences.

Armed with lawn chairs, water bottles and cosy coats, fans will gather this year to celebrate the company’s 35 years of outdoor theatre.
