Sekala Niskala: Line Drawing & Linocut Workshops

Experience the magic of contemporary Balinese art with two special artist-led workshops at Footscray Community Arts on 22 April 2023

The first workshop which runs from 11am–12pm, invites participants to learn basic line drawing and painting using the Sigar Mangsi technique, a classical Balinese art technique of colouring images with a monochrome gradient using black ink or paint on paper. The artists leading the workshop are Satya Cipta, Agus Saputra and Kuncir Sathya Viku.

From 12:30–2:30pm, a Line Drawing and Linocut Workshop led by artists Ni Luh Pangestu and Septa Adi outlines basic carving and printing techniques. Participants will learn how to hand carve a linoleum block using pre-made designs (or you can create your own), then ink and stamp on paper.

Both workshops include materials and there will be a break in between. Suitable for ages 10 and over.

Come and learn some of the staple techniques in Balinese art-making.

The workshops are being held as part of Sekala Niskala – a free exhibition being held at the Roslyn Smorgon Gallery showing from 18 April – 25 June 2023.
