Hawthorn Arts Centre will be screening Ben Shapiro’s critically acclaimed film ‘Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters’. The 80 minute documentary will be introduced by Daniel Boetker-Smith, Director of Centre for Contemporary Photography.
Reviewed by The New York Times as a “critic’s pick” when it premiered at South by Southwest Film Festival in 2012, the documentary accounts a decade of Crewdson’s grand scale practice from behind the scenes.
The acclaimed photographer with the eye of a filmmaker, Gregory Crewdson has created some of the most gorgeously haunting pictures in the history of the medium.
His meticulously composed, large-scale images are narratives of small-town American life ̶ moviescapes crystallised into a single frame. The artist has cited Edward Hopper and Diane Arbus as inspiration.
The photographs are staged with crews that rival many feature film productions, and Crewdson takes inspiration as much from his own dreams and fantasies as the cinematic worlds of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch.
Shot over a decade with unprecedented access, ‘Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters’ beautifully lays bare the artist’s process, and it’s as mesmerising as the images themselves.
“A perfect canvas for Crewdson’s epic creations, “Brief Encounters” reps a must-see for art lovers.” Ronnie Scheib, Variety Magazine.
The Town Hall Gallery will be open late for this event. Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase at the Boroondara Arts Bar.
