Her video for 'I'm gonna die with this frown on my face' is also out today.
Laced with critique and catharsis against corporations, Australia’s border security policies and a more general exploration of loss, birds and learning to breathe, Ruby’s debut album is one that completely stops you in your tracks – inviting you to come closer and uncover something new with every listen. Catch her when she heads to Naarm/Melbourne for a show at the Northcote social Club on November 24.

We loved her latest album: “Whether she’s singing about ‘public panic attacks’, arguing about driving directions (‘In time with the engine turning over’) or pondering “Why are you making me dinner?/ Why am I still here?” following a trip to an ex-boyfriend’s house to collect her things (‘All the birds under the Westgate’), Gill’s delivery switches from sweet-sounding to cracking with raw emotion on a dime.
A classically trained pianist and self-confessed Missy Higgins tragic, Gill’s vocal tone and devastatingly beautiful, wistful melodies are testament to her fandom.”
‘I’m gonna die with this frown on my face’: Ruby Gill’s wistful melodies are testament to her fandom
The 12-track album, which debuted at #5 on the AIR Independent Album chart, features previously released singles, ‘Champion Ruby’, a song about Ruby’s unhealthy attraction to people who smoke cigarettes, ’Public Panic Attacks’, which brims with the self-deprecating humour that is quickly becoming Ruby’s trademark, ‘Borderlines’, an unsent letter to the immigration department, as well as ‘I Forgot To Be Profound Today’ a minimal, piano-led single that Ruby describes as being a “small act of defiance against a job that makes me tired and a world that I never feel truly interesting enough for”. Her singles to date have garnered praise across the globe, from The Sunday Times, The Independent and The Guardian, to NME, triple j, KCRW and BBC 6Music.
She has appeared on stages around the world, from Oppikoppi to Woodford, with accolades such as “Emerging Artist of the Year” at Port Fairy Folk Festival, and a finalist in NLMA’s Live Act of the Year (VIC) to her name, as well as high-profile support tours with the likes of Lime Cordiale, Liz Stringer, Mia Dyson and The Teskey Brothers.
