Royal Blood’s much anticipated follow-up to their self-titled 2014 debut is an effort that looks to expand on what made them such a breakout hit, without straying too far from what shot them so quickly to stardom.
While a much more melodic album, it doesn’t do away entirely with the raw energy of its predecessor, however it has been noticeably turned down for a sound which is much more refined.
Lead single Lights Out is a song that would be at home on any good rock playlist and will likely be gracing setlists for years and years to come, while Where Are You Now? And Hook, Line & Sinker are testaments to how much noise can be made by just one drummer and only one guitarist, a feature that makes Royal Blood so unique.
While the edge has been taken off slightly, Royal Blood’s second album is as good a collection of rock tracks as any without being a masterpiece. But who can blame them for not quite living up to the unbelievably lofty expectations set by their debut? Nonetheless this album is still pretty damn good.
