Hailing from the United States, the band found their footing in the 1990s as an instigator of the riot grrrl scene. Brash and bratty, they have carved out a place in cultural history with their feminist politics, DIY ethos, and heavy tracks like the iconic Rebel Girl, recently labeled as the 10th best song of the ’90s by Pitchfork.
Super fans can catch the original members Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail and Kathi Wilcox at ACMI on March 9 for a panel discussion and screening of the film Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains. Hosted by Lee Gambin, the band will cover how the cult classic film, following three low-income girls who take up with a group of washed-up punk rockers, helped to ignite the riot grrrl movement.
