Luke from SteelBirds
Define y our genre in five words or less:
Soul singing, motown folk rocking!
Someone walks passed as you’re playing, they get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?
Got to get inside folks! These guys’ harmonies are tight, the guitarist has a sweet bandana on and a pedal board equipped for space travel.
How long have you been gigging and writing?
SteelBirds is the final destination for five minstrels, who’ve all trod a well worn path through the music industry. SteelBirds have been gigging for two years, but the writing has been happening since the beginning of time.
What’ s been your favourite gig you’ve played to date?
It’s a toss up between our EP launch at The Espy or a festival that we played in country Queensland last year. Almost everyone in town was there!
Which band would you most like to have a battle/showdown with?
A Bon Iver/Kiss super band or Low Speed Bus Chase.
What inspires or has influenced your music the most?
Working with homeless people in Melbourne’s CBD and seeing the way people around the world cope with disadvantage always reminds me how beautiful and resilient the human race can be.
What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?
Have a lot of friends or be really good at IT. To change that norm, come and see us play.
Do you have any record releases to date? What? Where can I get it?
SteelBirds have released an EP, Until We Never and a full length DVD Live at Collarts. Both are almost sold out but are available from Pure Pop Records or via email- [email protected]. Check the vids out on youtube.
Why should every one come and see your band?
For the first time in my musical career, I truly believe that the effort, the songs and the serendipitous happening, that lead to what is a pretty monster five-piece lineup, have resulted in not only a band that can demonstrate in the studio but produce on the stage. Sonically, you’ll walk away beaming, and also I’m told the bass player isn’t a bad looker!
When are you playing live/releasing your album/EP/single/etc?
SteelBirds are working it this Spring/Summer with a gig at The Evelyn on Sunday October 16, playing alongside Gossling at the Hume Festival of Music and Gertrude’s Brown Couch on October 28. SteelBirds are also inked in for a front bar residency at The Espy throughout January. We’re going into the studio to work on a full length album. Stay tuned for release date next year.
