Q&A: Shortfall

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

Hopefully if they are familiar with the alternative rock scene that is churning out amazing bands left, right and centre, they would say we fit that mould but with a touch of uniqueness also. Guys like Twelve Foot Ninja, Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus and many more who are flying the flag for great local hard rock music are big influences.

What do you hate about the music industry?

At the risk of sounding cliché, the very nature of commercial radio stations ‘imposing’ their beliefs about what is cool and not cool to listen to. I’m not saying everything commercial is crap, there’s a lot of good stuff out there, but there’s a hell of a lot of better stuff out there (especially in our own backyards) if people just searched for it. That and the fact that nobody seems to feel the need to put a band together to get their stuff on the radio anymore. Pick up a guitar or set of drum sticks kids, trust me it’s a hell of a lot of fun!

What can a punter expect from your live show?

Lots of energy, lots of fun. Music they can relate to. We like to try and be a bit different with our shows, so you never know what we’ll do to mix things up a bit.

Where would you like to be in five years?

Hopefully still doing what I love, except maybe in some bigger rooms with more people watching.

How do you balance making and playing music with your other commitments?

Well we all juggle work and study full time, which can make things difficult. But music is the best release anyone could ask for. I think it’s a good way to thrash out the stresses and tension of our working week. We plug in and our poor guitars, drums and voices cop the brunt of the stress that we’ve all built up during the week.

When are you playing live/releasing your album/EP/single/etc?

We’re launching our debut EP on April 19th at the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy. It’s been a long time coming and we’re really excited to finally be getting it out there. Tickets for the launch are $10 and can be purchased by contacting us at facebook.com/shortfallband
