Q&A: Rich Davies & The Devil’s Union

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?

Rich Davies & The Devil’s Union, my name is Rich and I assume the role of singer-songwriter- guitarist.

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

It can be dirty and pretty. It’s difficult to say, somewhere between Arcade Fire, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Bruce Springsteen, I’d say it’s alt-country and folk-inspired indie rock.

What do you love about making music?

Music, it’s a soul thing. I love everything about it. The connection between audience and performer on stage, the recording, the writing and arranging. It is just simply the thing I am meant to do with my life.

What do you hate about the music industry?

I don’t like to be a cynic, there are things I love to do and things I like less but ultimately, I’m happy to do it all because I’m committed to my music, you just gotta enjoy the ride.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

I don’t need a time machine, just a ticket to New Jersey. Without a doubt, my biggest musical hero is Bruce Springsteen.

W hat can a punter expect from your live show?

It’s a varied show. We can go from tender, dark and somber alt country to crazy wild rock’n’roll swinging from the rafters kind of stuff, and I probably swear too much.

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?

Our self titled debut album is released nationally on Friday November 18.

When’s the gig and with who?

We launch our album at The Retreat Hotel on Friday November 18 with Plastic Palace Alice supporting.
