Q&A: Leon Thomas

Define your genre in five words or less:

Rock and roll with soul.

What inspires or has influenced your music the most?

Rock’n’roll is the great musical liberator of the 20th century. I owe so much to the rock, soul and blues music which has liberated me. I’m just giving that back now and adding my two cents.

What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?

I think the best thing to do is to ignore all of the noise and confusion of the music industry and be your truth. Be your truth without compromise for anybody or anything. Then focus on making great art. For me that is what being an artist is about. Whatever else you get is icing on the cake.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

To leave the room feeling lighter.

What do you love about making music?

It pays well, is a secure job and it gives me plenty of time to explore my creativity on the side.

What makes you happiest about what you’re doing?

I’m being true to myself – nobody else.

If someone made a movie about your life, who would play you?

Elvis Presley.

When are you playing live?

Wednesday nights in November at the Grace Darling. Two shows left – tonight and Wednesday November 28. The band is smoking and we’ve lined up some awesome supports. Check out leonthomas.com.au and my Facebook for details.
