Q&A: Floating Me

floatingme.jpg

Your band’s name:

Floating Me

What’s the deal with the band’s name:

It came from the lyrics of our song Spirals. It took some time to get used to but we’re good with it now. It is very open to interpretation so you can attach to it what you see or feel. Goat Bothers Of Oslo have a specific task and location. Still… it’s the music that identifies the title eventually.

Define your sound in five words or less:

Widescreen, heavy, detailed, sympho-electronic darkness

Someone is walking past as you’re playing, they get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?

If I could actually hear that?

“The singer can’t stop playing with his beard.”

“What?”

“That drum solo was sick!”

“Don’t do it on me man…”

“What?

And how do they dance? Like they’ve never danced before.

How long have you been gigging and writing?

Floating Me has been gigging since February this year. Most of us have been writing since the early 90’s.

What’s been your favourite gig you’ve played to date?

Hard to choose between the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne or the Rosemount in Perth.

What inspires or has influenced your music the most?

There are too many influences between us to list. We’re pushing to create spaces that we’re less familiar with. Personally I like music that draws me into some other place from where I am. Music as a soundtrack or wallpaper for right now doesn’t interest me as much.

Favourite piece of on-stage banter, or fan-related craziness?

Fans flying down from Sydney to Geelong or driving from Rockhampton to Brisbane for a show is a good kind of crazy.

What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?

Good management is the bridge between your art and its survival. You need a team that is passionate about your music and connected effectively to the various arms of the business to assist it’s growth into something sustainable.

Do you have any releases to date? What? Where can I get it? Is it good?

Our self-titled debut was released in April this year. It’s available on iTunes worldwide. JB Hi Fi and some independent record stores have it in stock as well. We’re really happy with the album but it comes down to a listeners preferences as to whether they reckon it’s good or not.

Why should everyone come and see you?

You have to like your music loud but there’s a good balance of light and shade within that. There is a lot going on within our songs and each song holds it’s own weight. Jono and Lucius are a pretty compelling rhythm section. I’ve been working hard on some new beard twiddling moves.

When and where are you playing next?

Thursday October 27 at the Bended Elbow in Geelong, and Friday October 28 at the East Brunswick Club in Melbourne.

Famous last words:

“Help…. help…”
