Victoria’s iconic steam railway Puffing Billy announces the return of the travelling light show spectacular this winter.

Following an overwhelmingly successful first run last year, the immersive Train of Lights experience on the Puffing Billy is back in June and July for its second-ever run.

Taking place as soon as darkness takes over, the mesmerising winter steam train will become adorned with thousands of dazzling lights and stunning visual effects, illuminating the trees, tracks, and passing towns, captivating passengers with its magical charm.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Running from Friday 23 June to Sunday 9 July, the Train of Lights will depart daily from Lakeside Station and embark on a two-and-a-half-hour return journey that chugs along the historic narrow-gauge track to Gembrook.

Partnering with acclaimed lighting specialists, Resolution X (White Night, Melbourne Fashion Festival), this stunning evening experience will come to life with sparkling lights, hypnotic patterns, and vivid colours that dance across the open rolling hills of the Gembrook countryside.

Along the way, guests will be treated to a truly immersive experience that showcases the natural beauty of the region in a whole new light, from the interplay of light and shadow casting a beautiful glow on the Wright Forest, to the glimpses of native wildlife projections that leap from the carriages and onto timber trestle bridges and the moving landscape. It’s truly breathtaking and takes the already amazing train ride to new sensational heights.

After a scenic ride, the train arrives at the charming Gembrook Station, where passengers enjoy a 55-minute stopover. Here, they can warm up by the crackling open fire pits and sip on a comforting hot chocolate, listen to the sounds of a live musician, capture a photo with the beautifully lit-up train or the friendly Puffing Billy Railway volunteers who make the experience all the more special.

While taking place in the depths of winter, the Train of Lights experience runs rain, hail or shine. The Dandenong Ranges can get very cold at night, and with passengers seated in open-side carriages, so rug up and don’t be shy to bring layers.

If you’d prefer something a little more posh, the Puffing Billy is also hosting a fancy dining experience this winter with tickets on sale now.
