Prince Bandroom offers a Y2K party, a techno rave and a tribute to The Police this July

The Prince is not only a music venue. It’s a cultural institution.

Established in the 1950s, it’s long been a community hub, bringing together fans of live music, great food and drink, and good times.

A hotel, events space, restaurant, bar and wine shop wrapped into one, it’s a defining part of the neighbourhood. St Kilda just wouldn’t be the same without it.

This month sees the hallowed halls of the bandroom brought to life by three major events. Dance yourself silly to throwback tracks at a vibrant Y2K-themed party, feel the full-throttle bass at a hardcore techno rave, or groove to the iconic tunes of British rockers The Police  – or, why not all three? July’s events just go to show how versatile the venue can be.

With pulsing lights and a powerful PA, the Prince Bandroom is the perfect place to indulge in a night of live music. Read on to find out more about what’s happening at the Prince.

Bring out your Ugg boots, hair bands and frosted eye shadow, because this party’s transporting us straight back to the 2000s. Presented by Emo Diva, an emo night for the “ baddies and saddies”, this nostalgic event will be soundtracked by all of our favourite Y2K queens, including Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera and more.

There will also be emo music, of course, coming in the form of My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco. It’ll run from 9pm until late and more than half the tickets are already sold, so get in quick to secure your spot.

Following a huge launch, Melbourne-based hard techno rave organisers Cortex are back with a massive double header featuring two stand-out international acts.

Budapest-based pioneer SveTec will bring his relentless beats, thundering baselines and enigmatic energy to the stage. A veteran in the scene, SveTec is best known for tracks like Dibby Sound and I Can Be Your Freak, as well as his tight command of the dance floor.

He’ll be joined by Liverpool native producer Mahtal, a quickly rising face in the hardcore techno world. Born in 2000, he broke out with his hit track All In This and has since earned support from artists including 999999999, Nico Moreno, Sara Landry and Shlomo. The Prince Bandroom show will be his debut performance in Melbourne.

Every Breath You Take: A Tribute To The Police

There’s no denying the massive influence and unforgettable talent of The Police. Led by Sting, the group fused rock, reggae, punk and jazz to become a defining figure in the British new wave scene.

This two-hour show is Australia’s premiere tribute to the band, featuring all of the biggest hits from across their five-album discography as well as a few tracks from Sting’s solo career. Boogie down to Roxanne, Every Breath You Take, Walking on the Moon and more as the band guides you through an evening of music and storytelling.

The band stays true to the original instrumentation of The Police with guitar, bass and drums/percussion, adding synthesizers and keyboards for that distinct edge.

From rugby pitch to DJ booth, James Haskell has made one of the most unexpected career pivots in recent memory. The former England international, who earned 77 caps and represented the British and Irish Lions, has traded stadiums for stages, spinning high-energy tech-house sets at global hotspots from Ibiza to Dubai.

Haskell’s sound blends groove-heavy minimalism with driving tech-house pulse, weaving between deep cuts and euphoric crowd-pleasers with percussive precision. Since retiring from rugby in 2019, he’s supported legends like Carl Cox while carving out a multi-faceted career spanning DJing, broadcasting, comedy and authorship.

Beyond the decks, Haskell co-hosts The Good, The Bad and The Rugby, one of the world’s biggest sports podcasts with 150,000 weekly listeners, alongside his monthly house music show Backrow Radio. He’s also a familiar face on British TV with appearances on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, A League of Their Own and Question of Sport.

As a Sunday Times Top 10 bestselling author with titles like What A Flanker and Ruck Me, plus bestselling fitness books including Perfect Fit and Rugby Fit, Haskell proves he’s just as comfortable behind the decks as he was on the pitch.
