Prepare for take-off: the Australian International Airshow is back this March

Australian International Airshow

Please put your bag in the overhead compartment and buckle your seatbelt. The cabin crew will be coming around with refreshments shortly.

Aerophiles, jet-setters and wannabe pilots, this is the weekend you won’t want to miss. After a four-year hiatus, the Australian International Airshow is making a comeback with a sky-high celebration bigger than ever before.

From March 3 to 5, some of the world’s best jets will take over the Avalon Airport to perform dramatic displays of aerial prowess. The three-day fest will also have up-close viewings of specialised aircrafts, food and beverage options and live entertainment. To get things started, the Friday Night Alight event will feature evening avian aerobatics and a laser light show.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

On the ground, keep yourself busy by helping to build a real-life aircraft or attending a meet-and-greet with one of the talented pilots. Then, look up to watch one of the many live drone battles, fireworks shows, or military plane showcases. If you’re keen to get a little air yourself, there will also be helicopter joy rides available to the public.

This year’s Airshow will also be the first Australian appearance for the world-renowned South Korean flight display team, the Black Eagles. Zooming through the sky in their signature black and yellow jets, the league will dazzle viewers with their signature move, the Taegeuk, where they form a Korean flag out of precision flying and smoke.

“The Australian International Airshow is roaring into Avalon bigger and better than before. We’re changing Airshow into an interactive experience for kids and families, a night out for the younger crowd, and a real treat for aviation enthusiasts – and this is just the beginning,” said Justin Giddings, CEO of the company that organises the show, AMDA Foundation Limited.

Put your goggles on and get ready to go full-throttle. Or, y’know, head out to Geelong and just look up – you’re bound to see something cool.
