With inescapable catchiness, it’s a song you simply can’t stop coming back to.
Formed within the throes of the pandemic, Brisbane’s fresh-faced alt-pop/hip hop outfit Cinnamon Sun have arrived with their kaleidoscopic new single, ‘Goosebumps’.
Combining the multi-skilled talents of celebrated indie artists Davy Simony, Jimmy Harwood, Chaddy B, Harrison Brown and Hugo Lee, ‘Goosebumps’ is the follow up to the band’s debut single ‘If You Call’, and the second single from their forthcoming album.
Keep up to date with all the latest music interviews, news and reviews here.
Boasting slick instrumentation immersing you deep into a blissfully calm pool of captivating storytelling, ‘Goosebumps’ stirs the sonic melting pot of alternative pop, hip hop beats, distant electric guitar riffs and ’80s vintage-style keys and infatuating vocal hooks.
With nods to the likes of Mac Miller, Still Woozy, Horrorshow and Tom Misch, the alt-pop, soul, jazz and hip hop influences surge and flourish throughout the track, resulting in an infectious blend of instrumentals. ‘Goosebumps’ takes on a life of its own, combining jazzy chords and licks, lush mid-tempo production, floating guitars, modern pop and wavy synths, with frontman Davy Simony’s smooth, honeyed vocals and Jimmy Harwood‘s captivating hip hop-influenced vocals.
With razor-sharp production, the laid-back track sees Simony expand on his signature sonic palette that we’ve come to know, seamlessly blending into some great Aussie hip hop, resulting in a sound that is incredibly unique and entirely Cinnamon Sun’s; a journey defined by vivid colours and flair.
Listen to the premiere of ‘Goosebumps’ below.
Topped with fleeting summer vibes, jazzy grooves and unique tones, the track stands as a yearning for that one special person – your twin flame, or soulmate – that you know is out there but you haven’t found yet. An ode to finding that person with whom you have a deep attraction or infinity, the track revolves around the goosebumps, anticipation and chills that come along with it.
“The song literally started with the word ‘Goosebumps’,” says Simony.
“I came to Jimmy’s home studio with nothing but that word as a concept. We spoke about the feelings that word evokes and got to work. Funny to think the acoustic guitar was the first thing tracked (considering how it turned out). We fleshed out the beat/instrumentation, wrote and recorded vocals all in the same day.”
Placing Cinnamon Sun’s skills for songwriting and production front and centre, ‘Goosebumps’ was spawned from the five-piece’s desire to write wistful and uplifting melodies.
“The album is full of tracks with positive messages,” explains Simony.
“We want to lift people up and encourage them to be their authentic self, there is immense freedom in that. Art is anything that evokes emotion, right? That’s what we want to do, make people feel something, and by doing so encourage unity and connectedness, which in turn heals, and helps people love each other.”
A clear amalgam of each individual’s musical prowess, the track is just four minutes and 29 seconds of pure bliss, with much credit to the dreamy minute-long introduction packed with swirling synths, pulsing beats and lush soundscapes.
Armed with music sure to add warmth to even the gloomiest winter day, we’re betting we’ll be seeing Cinnamon Sun on a bunch of festival lineups in the not-too-distant future – especially considering its members have already toured Australia, America, Europe and Japan collectively, supporting world-class acts Tash Sultana, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Daryl Braithwaite.
“We can see the band going down real well at festivals,” Simony reveals.
“There’s only been one full-band show so far (which was the Cairns launch for the last single, ‘If You Call’), but there have been a bunch of solo shows, including Tablelands Folk Fest, and we are currently booked to play Kuranda Roots Festival!”
Musically, Cinnamon Sun has created a winning formula: infectious hooks, genuine vocals, swirling synths and jazzy chords, hip hop grooves, band cohesion, and an overall inimitable comforting conscious vibe. While only the second single from the forthcoming album, if they expand on the formula above, we could be taking a front-row seat to the development of one of the next major alt-pop/hip hop bands on the circuit.
