There's something magical about the combination of live music and sunny skies.

On March 9th, Play on the Plains took over Deniliquin, NSW, drawing in fans and top-tier talent from around Australia.

With a lineup of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Baker Boy, Northeast Party House, Alex Lahey, Kita Alexander, The Carp Factory, and a battle of the bands between sets, attendees were treated to an exciting lineup spanning genres.

Despite the sweltering conditions, which even caused some of Alex Lahey’s equipment to succumb to the heat, the show still went on. Seekers of respite found solace in the water stations and shaded areas of the festival grounds.

As the sun set, anticipation reached a high for the main event: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. For drummer Michael Cavanagh, this was more than just another show, but a return to his roots, having grown up in Deni. King Gizzard gave a nod to their connection to the town with their performance of “Willoughby’s Beach”, a song from the 2011 EP of the same title, and a swimming spot for locals.

Despite the crowd’s chants for “one more song”, the festival drew to a close, with sweaty and satisfied patrons dispersing from the Deniliquin Festival Site. Play on the Plains 2024 stands as a scorching success — a testament to Australian music lovers’ resilience and the protective power of SPF.
