The Royal Exhibition Building's iconic dome promenade has reopened to the public, offering stunning panoramic views of Melbourne's evolving cityscape alongside a dose of living history.
Dating back to the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed landmark has witnessed nearly 150 years of Melbourne’s transformation. Now visitors can once again experience the spectacular vantage point that wowed international guests during both the 1880 and 1888 exhibitions.
The guided tours take punters through an exhibition exploring the building’s colourful history and varied uses throughout the decades, from grand international showcases to exam hall and even a hospital during the 1919 influenza pandemic.

Heritage buffs can complement their dome experience with a proper Devonshire Tea at Mercury Restaurant in the adjacent Melbourne Museum. The combo features freshly baked scones with berry preserve and clotted cream, plus bottomless tea while gazing at the historic building.
The building itself has survived numerous threats of demolition throughout its lifetime, narrowly escaping the wrecking ball during the 1960s urban renewal push that claimed many of Melbourne’s Victorian-era structures.
Its salvation and subsequent UNESCO listing in 2004 marked a turning point in Australia’s approach to heritage conservation, establishing the site as the first building in the country to receive World Heritage status.
Bookings for the Dome Promenade tours are essential, with limited spots available to ensure an intimate experience. The tour is fully accessible via lift, and group bookings can be arranged for special events.
