Nine times Thank God You’re Here had us in stitches

Thank God You're Here
Words by Sarah Duggan

Thank God You’re Here first graced our screens in 2006, quickly becoming a beloved series nationwide with its unique format and impressive catalogue of hilarious guests.

There was nothing quite like dinner in front of the TV while you tuned into the latest episode, having a good laugh at each bizarre scenario and arguing over which act should win, and thanks to the show’s revival in 2023 those moments can be relived.

If you’re unfamiliar, Thank God You’re Here is an improvised comedy show, where well-known comedians walk through a door into an unknown situation, being met with the line, “Thank god you’re here!” Finding themselves in all sorts of scenarios, each performer must improvise their way through until they hear the siren, with a winner crowned at the end of each episode.

With season six just around the corner, we’ve revisited some of the best Thank God You’re Here moments- here’s nine times the show had us in stitches.

Find Melbourne’s latest film and TV news here.

  1. Season 3, Episode 9- Rebel Wilson Meets Some Italian Stallions

Before she was a big-shot movie star, Rebel Wilson was a Thank God You’re Here favourite.

Her nonchalant demeanour, dead-pan tone and quick wit make her effortlessly hilarious, and she absolutely shone in every appearance on Thank God You’re Here, particularly when she found herself in Italy on a double date with two ‘Italian Stallions’. This sketch is to thank for iconic lines such as “Oi, ya bush pig!”, Rebel’s questionable Italian language skills and of course recommending Pizza Hut as an Aussie cultural site to visit.

  1. Season 3, Episode 2- Hamish Blake Gets In Trouble With The Police

Hamish Blake’s frequent appearances on Thank God You’re Here were eagerly anticipated in my house, and while it’s hard to choose a favourite, this one comes to mind instantly.

It was always exciting when the entrance was a little different, and with a cop entering the blue door behind Blake, you just knew it was about to get good. Playing a schoolboy who had been in trouble with the law, Blake’s ability to think on his feet and make a wild situation even more ridiculous is always a joy to watch.

  1. Season 3, Episode 9- Peter Rowsthorn Is The Worst Superhero

Making his entrance dressed as a Superhero being held captive, beloved Aussie comedian and Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn plays Electroboy in this hilarious sketch.

Unleashing the ability of his ‘power pants’, Electroboy tries (and fails) to escape the evil villain’s trap, even desperately using his stomach to try and burst the restraints. Rowsthorn’s physical comedy is unmatched, and the audience is in hysterics from start to finish. A standout is his ‘shark repellant’ sound, because what even is that?

  1. Season 4, Episode 7- Josh Lawson Is The Worst Submarine Captain

Thank God You’re Here regular Josh Lawson has made us laugh on numerous occasions throughout his nine appearances on the series.

In particular, when he played a terrible submarine captain tasked with giving his crew hope in a rather perilous situation. Lawson plays the bumbling captain role so confidently, that it’s hard to believe that this wasn’t rehearsed.

  1. Season 3, Episode 11- Julia Zemiro Has a Gentleman Caller

Julia Zemiro is a woman of many talents, and her ability to slip into character in an improvised sketch so quickly is definitely one of them.

This scene was a complete standout for me (and many others I’m sure!). Playing a young maiden who has inherited a farm, she attempts to woo her gentleman caller. From possum farming to bird calls, Zemiro shines in this particular scene.

  1. Season 1, Episode 10- Shaun Micallef Is The Worst Politician

Throwing it back to season one, Shaun Micallef plays the role of Foreign Affairs Minister in this wonderfully chaotic skit.

The problematic politician finds himself needing to offer an explanation as to how an oil spill occurred on his watch- and hilarity ensues. Not being able to keep a straight at times, Micallef has the audience in stitches- and still does even years later.

  1. Season 1, Episode 10- Angus Sampson Terrorises The Titanic

Angus Sampson is a Thank God You’re Here veteran, making eleven appearances throughout the first four seasons. Among these, his Titanic sketch is a standout.

Playing the role of a ladies’ man aboard the Titanic, this scene is full of memorable lines such as Sampson’s bizarre improvised George Bernard Shaw quote, “Mornings are fun, midday is great, but when it comes to the bedtime you should always run late”.

  1. Season 3, Episode 8- Anh Do Unveils The World’s Ugliest Car

Beloved artist, actor, comedian and author Anh Do stars in perhaps one of the most memorable sketches in Thank God You’re Here history with “The car that runs on dim-sims”. Tasked with unveiling the world’s ugliest car, Anh’s genuine surprise when the veil is pulled off is great, and his repetition of the line, “They stuffed it up, man!”, never fails to get a laugh.

  1. Season 3, Episode 5- Ross Noble Is The King Of The Elves

English stand-up comedian Ross Noble has made two appearances on Thank God You’re Here, with his most recent being in 2023.

It was his first appearance in 2007, however, where he delivered an unforgettable performance as the King of the Elves, that solidified him as a standout. Entering a Lord of the Rings-esque world behind the blue door, every word that comes out of Noble’s mouth is hilariously brilliant, made all more entertaining by his accent.

The new season of Thank God You’re Here premieres Wednesday, 14 August at 7:30pm on 10 And 10 Play.
