NFL cheerleaders are leading a world record attempt at Fed Square

Words by staff writer

Ever wanted to cheer like the pros? The Melbourne Cheer Challenge is going for a world record at Fed Square.

The free community event will see the San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleaders teach their signature routine before the whole crowd performs it together, chasing the record for the largest cheerleading dance.

The Melbourne Cheer Challenge needs to top a mark of 1,371 people, set in Japan back in 2015.

The Gold Rush are the official squad of the San Francisco 49ers and have spent more than 40 years performing at NFL games, building a reputation for precision, athleticism and high-energy routines. Their Fed Square appearance is one of their first outings in Melbourne, and they’ll walk everyone through the moves before the main event.

The attempt marks the opening of NFL game week, five days out from the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Los Angeles Rams at the MCG on 11 September. That match is the first regular season game the NFL has ever staged in Australia, and the city has a spread of events and activations lined up around it.

No dance experience is required, with people of all ages and abilities encouraged to join in. Falling on Father’s Day, it doubles as a family outing, and the choreography is being wrangled by producer Bec Reid, who has spent more than 20 years putting together large-scale participatory events across the country.

Taking part is free, though pre-registration is essential if you want your name counted towards the record. Registration opens at 11.30am at Main Square, and organisers say no one will be turned away for being a beginner – the whole point is getting as many people as possible onto the floor at once.
