The innovative new concept album that simulates a Melbourne night out from start to finish

Words by Tom Parker

For those missing the party life.

Extended Family are a DJ collective who throw parties in Melbourne but since COVID-19 hit and with no events to organise, they’ve altered their focus to something that celebrates the nature of going out and partying in a different ilk.

On Saturday July 25, Extended Family will release A Night Out – a concept album of mixes that traces five different stages of partying: pre’s, party, club, kick-ons and morning. The album will feature appearances from Extended Family’s finest, with Dance Motif, Highly Minogue, Tres Passings, Winnie the Wu, Jimanji and AR.Lloyd preparing mixes, while rising Melbourne DJ Frou Frou, who we recently featured as part of our Beats by Beat series, will jump on board to provide a guest mix.

A Night Out features seven mixes, each ranging from 45-60 minutes in length. To facilitate the flow of the record, Extended Family have incorporated Foley sound effects between and throughout each mix to embody the natural flow of a night out – think background chatter, lines outside clubs, cars etc.

The groundbreaking idea dresses DJ mixes in a new coat – the regular album structure positioning each mix as if they were songs. As Jimanji takes us through pre’s, out comes the UE BOOM and the night’s first beers. This is where the initial game plan is put in place. From there, Dance Motif jumps on the decks for the first instalment of the “party” section of the night – just before we reach the club. Then, Highly Minogue kicks things into gear before Frou Frou plays the first “club” mix.

From there, we’re off and running and as everyone slowly finds their rhythm on the d-floor, Winnie the Wu performs the second of two “club” mixes. Then it’s onto AR.Lloyd to soundtrack kick-ons as Tres Passings closes out the night with his morning mix.
