The NIMAs are one of Australia’s most important music events held under the stars at Darwin’s historic amphitheatre and for the first time ever, the awards will coincide with a speical CD collection of Indigenous music.
2017 has been a landmark year for Indigenous music in Australia, with A.B Original’s win of the Australian Music Price, #1 ARIA chart positions for Busby Marou and Jessica Mauboy as well as Troy Cassar-Daley’s Album of the Year success at the Golden Guitar Awards.
The awards are not just a place to celebrate the mainstream success of Indigenous music, but also an avenue to uncover the next generation of Australian musicians. Indigenous artists from across Australia and the Torres Strait are encouraged to submit their tracks to be judged by a panel of Australian and International music industry members.
The inaugural NIMAs album will be a two-CD set embracing Indigenous music’s past and present. The first disc will be a tribute to 2016-17’s finest selection while the second disc looks to include the best Indigenous songs of the past half-century, with the likes of Archie Roach, Christina Anu and Yothu Yindi set to be featured.
