Released digitally on 21 March, Bring Back Tomorrow represents the culmination of years of songwriting between founding members John Fraser (vocals/guitar) and Rowan Cole (vocals/mandolin/guitar/mandola), who formed the original Keynes Brothers before rebranding as Faces in the Street.
The band’s name carries significant weight, drawn from Henry Lawson’s poem depicting the marginalised in urban environments – a theme that resonates through their extensive catalogue of original music. This social consciousness runs through their work, which explores “life’s challenges, the human condition and the power of hope and perseverance.”
Late 2024 saw the duo expand to a trio with the addition of John Zak on bass, guitar and synth, bringing progressive country, swamp blues and Latin jazz influences to enhance their already eclectic sound.
The band describes their music as “indie folk for modern times,” fitting neatly into the genre’s characteristic blend of traditional acoustic folk instrumentation with contemporary elements. Their substantial back catalogue brings together rich vocal harmonies within what they describe as a “haunting soundscape of acoustic and electric instrumentation.”
While Bring Back Tomorrow marks their first release as Faces in the Street, the members have decades of combined experience across various genres. Fraser and Cole have been crafting songs together for years as the Keynes Brothers, with studio recordings dating back to at least 2020 available on Bandcamp.
The Merri Bar launch promises to showcase the trio’s evolved sound across two sets, giving fans both old and new a chance to experience their live energy in an appropriately intimate venue. Preston’s burgeoning music scene makes for a fitting backdrop to celebrate this milestone release from a band deeply connected to Melbourne’s musical landscape.
For those wanting a taste of what to expect before the launch, the album is now available for digital download, with the band active across various platforms including Bandcamp, Facebook and Bands In Town.
The launch gig offers a perfect opportunity to catch this emerging indie folk outfit at a pivotal moment in their evolution, as they bring their storytelling and instrumental prowess to the stage in celebration of their debut album.
