This recording highlights Chief Conductor Jaime Martín’s deep connection to the works of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. Under Martín’s direction since 2022, the MSO has made Dvořák a focal point of its performances, with the fifth and sixth symphonies being standout pieces in the orchestra’s second season. Martín’s interpretation of these symphonies draws from his personal history with Dvořák’s music, which began when he first heard his father’s LP of the New World Symphony as a child. He explains, “The music of Antonín Dvořák remains close to my heart. The nostalgia that his music provides for one’s home country has accompanied me since I first heard my father’s LP of the New World Symphony when I was ten years old. It has been my great honour to begin a Dvořák recording project with the world-class musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.”

The fifth symphony reflects Dvořák’s connection to his Czech homeland, capturing the natural beauty and character of its landscapes. It delivers an ode to Czech life, filled with melodic warmth and pastoral serenity. Meanwhile, the sixth symphony incorporates influences from Brahms and Wagner while also integrating Bohemian folk elements. Described as one of the most majestic works in symphonic literature, it is known for its grand and sweeping melodies that end in an uplifting, radiant conclusion.

The recording took place at Hamer Hall in 2023, and the album artwork for this Dvořák series will feature iconic scenes from across Victoria, starting with the Twelve Apostles of the Great Ocean Road.

Jaime Martín continues to expand his international profile, holding the role of Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2022, alongside his position as Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra since 2019. His MSO and LACO contracts have been extended through 2028 and 2027 respectively. Martín will also take on the role of Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales from the 2024/2025 season.

Dvořák: Symphonies 5 & 6 out 22 November. Available for pre-order from 18 October.
