Mulled wine, a giant moon and live stargazing: Scienceworks is going all out for the solstice

Scienceworks, Melbourne's beloved science museum is marking the longest night of the year with a special evening event packed with planetarium shows, mulled wine, and a giant indoor moon.

Scienceworks After Dark: Celebrate the Solstice lands on 20 June, turning the Spotswood museum into a winter wonderland for one night only.

The evening runs from 6pm to 10pm, and your ticket gets you into the Colour exhibition plus one planetarium show. Mulled wine is absolutely on the menu too.

The star of the show (quite literally) is the planetarium. What’s in the Sky Tonight: Solstice Edition runs five times across the night at 6:30pm, 7:15pm, 8pm, 8:45pm and 9:30pm, taking visitors on a 30-minute live journey through Melbourne’s winter night sky and out among the stars.

Sessions sell fast, so pick your timeslot when you grab your ticket.

Beyond the planetarium, the night is loaded with things to do.

The Colour: See the World in a New Light exhibition is a touring Questacon interactive featuring 21 hands-on exhibits exploring how colour works, and it’s open all evening. There’s also Museum of the Moon, a four-metre diameter lunar art installation floating in the Planetarium Foyer that’s genuinely hard to walk past without stopping.

For those wanting to get crafty, the STEM Lab hosts lantern making from 6pm to 9:30pm, tying into the long-held tradition of using light to mark the solstice across cultures worldwide.

Stargazing through a telescope is on from 8:30pm to 9:30pm out in the Arena. Sportsworks and Think Ahead exhibitions are also open throughout the night, so there’s plenty to keep curious minds busy between planetarium sessions.

Food and drinks are available for purchase on the night, on top of the included mulled wine.
