Monty Python's Spamalot is headed to Melbourne and Sydney, and it's bringing the killer rabbit with it.
The Tony Award-winning musical comedy, based on the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, will open at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre on 16 September for a limited season running through to 11 October. Produced by Drew Anthony Creative, the production features a book and lyrics by Monty Python’s Eric Idle and a score by Idle and John Du Prez. After the show’s 2005 Broadway debut, Monty Python’s Spamalot picked up three Tony Awards from 14 nominations, including Best Musical, and has since become one of the most celebrated comedy musicals in modern theatre.
The production completed a run at Perth’s Planet Royale in May and will now travel to the east coast for seasons across three venues in Melbourne and Sydney. After wrapping up at the Athenaeum, the show heads to Sydney’s Event Centre before transferring to the Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill for its final stretch.

The show follows King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on a gloriously absurd quest for the Holy Grail, with all the chaos you’d expect from anything carrying the Monty Python name. French taunters, fish slapping, the magnificent Lady of the Lake and yes, the killer rabbit, all feature in a production that takes every convention of musical theatre and tears it apart with glee.
The score includes well-known numbers such as Find Your Grail, The Song That Goes Like This and the iconic Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, performed alongside Broadway-style vocals, tap-dancing knights and the occasional flying cow. Casting and further creative details for the Australian run are set to be announced closer to the season.
Audiences can sign up for the waitlist for both the Melbourne and Sydney seasons ahead of the general on-sale dates. Monty Python’s Spamalot is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over.
