Australia’s most groundbreaking and ambitious festival Mona Foma comes to Hobart this January with a cool surprise up their sleeve.
For the first time, Mofo will sprawl two residences, two cities, promising two huge parties in the process. Before the main extravaganza kicks off, a Mini Mofo has been slated at Tasmania’s second capital, Launceston.
Kicking off on Friday January 12, Mini Mofo will run for three days until the Sunday where a free festival street party will go down sounding a changing of the guard for the popular occasion.
Festival curator, Brian Ritchie, hinted that 2017 could be their last dance at Hobart’s Mona Museum for a while, so introducing a smaller version at its new home is a fitting handover.
Capping off in Launceston on Sunday January 14, the festival will then shift to Hobart where a huge lineup is slated. According to Ritchie, Mona Foma has dived deeper for 2017 and an even more radical cross-section of artists, genres and agendas has been promised.
To embrace the festival’s progressive design, they’ve reached out to Pauline Hanson to jump on board.
“We parked a billboard out the front of her headquarters this morning and suggested she buy a ticket,” Ritchie says. “We hinted there could be a burqa-wearing heavy metal band on the bill. So
we’re pretty sure she’ll come.”
Mona Foma’s full lineup will be announced on Friday October 13.
