New Swanston Street entry point opens as Melbourne's Metro Tunnel rail network prepares for major transformation

Town Hall Station’s newest entrance opened today, giving passengers another way into the state-of-the-art Metro Tunnel station.

Sitting right next to Young & Jackson, the Swanston Street entrance provides direct and accessible entry to the station in the city’s heart. It’s also reachable via Cocker and Scott alleys off Flinders Lane, making it easier to navigate through one of Melbourne’s busiest spots.

Town Hall Station’s main entrance at City Square opened on 30 November during the Metro Tunnel’s Summer Start, with a third entrance at Federation Square planned to open later this year.

Expected to be one of the busiest stations on the new network, Town Hall Station connects passengers to Federation Square, Birrarung Marr, Southbank, St Paul’s Cathedral and Melbourne Town Hall.

Station features include a direct underground connection to Flinders Street Station, creating seamless transfers between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services, plus easy access to major tram routes along Swanston, Collins and Flinders streets.

Melburnians have already shown their enthusiasm for the Metro Tunnel, with more than 700,000 visits to stations over December and January as families, commuters and train enthusiasts explored the new stations during school holidays.

Metro Tunnel has doubled Melbourne’s underground rail network, letting passengers travel from Arden Station in North Melbourne to Anzac Station on St Kilda Road in just 12 minutes.

From Sunday’s Big Switch, Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham line services will run exclusively through the new tunnel, unlocking more than 1,200 extra weekly services and delivering trains every three to four minutes during peak periods.
