Remember when you’d call a number for game help?
Players can experience the golden era of videogame hint lines in Hint Line ’93, or care for a communal creature in ACMI EGG (think: Tamagotchi), restore colour in Tim Koch’s puzzle Salix8 Sunset, or traverse different perspectives in What’s Your Angle.
Visitors can also discover how Australian studios bring games to life, tracking the development of Isopod by Queensland’s Sbug Games and checking out new playable prototypes by Melbourne’s 2pt Interactive. The exhibition also features Guardian Maia, Terra Nil and Celeste, alongside home-computer classics from the 1980s and 90s including The Sentinel, The Hobbit, DOOM and Team Fortress. Basically, if you’ve loved it at some point, it’s probably here.
Microgames by Aussie developers
Four newly commissioned microgames from Australian developers will be playable across the museum.
The exhibition offers late-night access, developer talks, inclusive visits and industry events throughout its run. Themed fan events will celebrate gaming communities with dates dropping soon. Exclusive merchandise will be available from ACMI Shop, including limited-edition collectibles for Neopets, The Sims and Hollow Knight: Silksong. Your wallet has been warned.
ACMI is your home for gaming culture
Game Worlds is the third major large-scale videogame exhibition at ACMI, following Game On in 2008 and Game Masters in 2012, which was seen by more than 1.1 million people worldwide during its international tour.
“Game Worlds is not just an exhibition for videogame fans and their families, but for those who are curious about why we say they are the ‘defining art form of this century’,” ACMI Director & CEO Seb Chan said.
“This exhibition celebrates the people, the players, the craft and technologies that make on-screen worldbuilding possible. We are very excited to premiere a new ACMI-made exhibition for our visitors to experience, play, and enjoy here in Melbourne first, before it heads out overseas on a long international tour.”
