Flickerfest Best of Melbourne Shorts puts a spotlight on the diverse voices, cultures and perspectives that make Melbourne’s film scene so compelling.
Carefully curated from films with Victorian talent selected for Flickerfest’s prestigious competition in Bondi, this lineup is a genuine cross-section of what Australian short filmmaking looks like right now: personal, sharp, funny, tender and everything in between.
Among the nine films screening on the night is Packed Away, the directorial debut of actress Michala Banas (Always Greener, McLeod’s Daughters), a personal and intimate drama in which she steps both behind and in front of the camera.
Also screening is The Suit, directed by Jesse Vogelaar, a sharp comedy featuring Kat Stewart and comedian Colin Lane delivering big laughs with plenty of bite. Other films include Cracked by Monty Callan, For My Mother by Marc Vecchio (shot in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs), contemporary comedy The Scan by Jake Shannon, Writers in Love by Sarah Joan Wischusen Giles, Thank You All The Same by Justin Villar, Bubba from alumni director Nina Buxton, and They Loved Us the Most by James Beaufort.
Tickets include all the hand-picked shorts in one sitting, a complimentary glass of Rosnay organic wine on arrival, and a chance to hear directly from Melbourne filmmakers before the screening kicks off. It’s a rare opportunity to meet the people behind the work and celebrate local storytelling in proper style.
Flickerfest has always championed emerging and established filmmakers alike, and this Melbourne showcase is no exception, bringing the glitz and energy of the festival experience to local audiences who deserve to see this calibre of work on the big screen.
