Melbourne’s latin music star Vanessa Estrada drops ‘Cancion de despedida’

Vanessa Estrada

One of the driving forces behind Melbourne's latin music, Vanessa Estrada, has released a new single and video for 'Cancion de despedida' (Farewell Song).

Estrada uses the Chilean folk style ‘cueca’ and Argentine ‘chacarera’, two facets of the chacarera folk musical styles that predominated in the southern regions of South America and provide a rural equivalence to the cosmopolitan associations of the tango.

She combines these with gentle jazz, electronic and rock influences – she lists some of her idols as Violeta Parra, Pascuala Ilabaca and Elizabeth Morris – to craft her unique portrayal of songs that deal with heartbreak and the pain of saying goodbye.
