Melbourne’s first ever floating club launches this spring

Words by Aidan Williams

Melbourne’s first ever floating open-air club and event space, ATET, is nearing completion after receiving the greenlight from City of Melbourne and will officially open this spring.

Built on a repurposed barge, ATET is anchored on North Wharf beneath the Bolte Bridge towers. Showing off a two-storey twin deck fit out, the space can hold over 500 potential punters, and provide them with views of Melbourne’s skyline across Victoria Harbour.

Named after the solar barge of the Egyptian sun god Ra, the venue is designed primarily as an outdoor open-air space, but is capable of being completely enclosed with a series of clear PVC roof and wall panels, providing protection from the elements while maintaining the open-air experience.

Housing an expansive open deck as its primary space, with a mezzanine level above it, ATET also boasts two bars and a commercial kitchen. Filled with loose modular furniture, the venue can be rearranged to suit a diverse range of events and functions.

A concept five years in the making, DJ and Architect Jake Hughes says “ATET is more than just a bar on water. We are channelling the open-air day party experience of festivals and day clubs around Europe and providing it on a regular basis in the heart of Melbourne.”

Situated on Docklands’ last remaining undeveloped wharf, and only a short distance from the CBD, ATET is highly accessible while still feeling secluded. While ATET will be permanently moored in Docklands this summer, the mobile venue has the ability to relocate and there are plans to venture into Port Philip Bay for special events in the near future.

With the first shows still to be announced, Jake and the team behind the project are busy curating the sound of ATET, with a host of talented local and international artists in the works for the upcoming 2022 Melbourne summer.
