Melbourne Zoo unleashes boozy wildlife adventure this March

Melbourne Zoo
Melbourne Zoo's Roar and Pour Festival.
Words by Staff Writer

Melbourne Zoo is bringing together local craft beer, summery cocktails and wildlife. Roar and Pour festival is set to transform the lush grounds into a boozy playground.

The Melbourne Zoo twilight drinks event promises a rare chance to spot animals after hours, with punters able to wander the trails before sunset to catch a unique glimpse of wildlife at dusk. Just imagine sipping a crisp pale ale while watching lions lounging in the golden hour light – proper bucket list stuff.

While getting on the beers might be the main attraction, your visit actually helps Zoos Victoria save local wildlife from extinction. Warm and fuzzy feelings all round.

An impressive lineup of local and interstate breweries and distilleries will be slinging free tastings across the zoo lawns, with your adult ticket ($52.05, or $47.05 for Zoo members) including a special tasting cup. Once you’ve sampled your way through the offerings, you can settle in with full drinks from the open-air bars.

The festival features a stacked list of brewers and distillers including Kaiju Beer, Tallboy and Moose, Mobile Pubs, Sundays Distilling, Brewmanity Beer Co, Inner North Brewing Co, Jimmy Rum, Ramblers Ale Works, The Prosecco Van, Westside Ale Works, Watts River Brewing, Aunty Jacks and Grainery Lane.

For those feeling peckish after a few bevs, food will be available from vendors at the Picnic Lawns and Rail Gate Café, with VIP ticket holders scoring a food hamper for two and a picnic blanket to sprawl out on.

Between drinks and feeds, punters can dive into a stack of activities including carousel rides, live acoustic music, lawn games, airbrush tattoos, a silent disco, and animal talks featuring lemurs (6pm), giraffes (6.20pm) and lions (6.50pm).

Kids under 18 can attend free with a paying adult, making it a surprisingly family-friendly affair – though the event has partnered with DrinkWise to promote responsible drinking, reminding attendees that “you won’t miss a moment if you DrinkWise.”

Melbourne Zoo has transformed the traditional boring drinks festival formula by adding actual wild animals to the mix, creating a uniquely Melburnian experience that combines our love of craft beverages with our obsession with wildlife conservation.
