Melbourne punk rockers department. release blistering new track, ‘New Crave’

Since 2016, department. have become a beloved fixture of Melbourne’s no wave scene. They delivered their debut record, Dpt Pty Ltd, in 2017 and turned heads across the city, bringing to mind local peers such as Dumb Punts, Drunk Mums and Mesa Cosa with their scuzzy, outspoken melange of punk and garage.

Now, the band are back with a new single. ‘New Crave’ is quintessentially brash, noisy and lyrically profound – as department. frontman Josh Chugg explains, the song is about humans’ constant pursuit for something extra, even if it is unnecessary.

“’New Crave’ deals with the endless obsessions, addictions and fixations that allow us to escape our immediate reality, for another,” Chugg says. “Whether it is escapism, coping or entertainment, there is a consensus that there must be more to our living experience than what we soberly absorb through our senses.

“It is about searching and finding the next thing to give ourselves to, with a monomaniacal devotion, eventually and inevitably realising we were better off without it, once it is too late.”

The song is out through Sunset Pig Records, the Melbourne indie record label boasting the likes of A. Swayze & The Ghosts, Hobsons Bay Coast Guard, The Pretty Littles and more.
