Melbourne Now: Community Hall presents free performances, films, talks, events and more

Words by Noah Redfern

Beginning in March, the NGV will be delivering its largest and most ambitious program series as part of Melbourne Now.

Community Hall is a program inspired by the history of Australian halls, and the role they play in both metropolitan and regional communities throughout the state of Victoria.

Daily events will be taking place from 24 March up until 20 August. These will consist of talks, films, performances, events, workshops and drop-in activities.

Highlights include the Melbourne Now Performance Program, featuring works by leading Melbourne-based performance artists and dancers APHIDS, Alicia Frankovich, Jo Lloyd and Joel Bray. The works will be presented in the Community Hall, which commences Saturdays on April 1, 8, 15 and 22.

NGV x Recess: Artist Film Program will have daily screenings in the Community Hall. With work from 21 different Melbourne-based filmmakers, these films will demonstrate the talent available in our city and the growth through creative practice.

Artists and designers will be featured for extended residencies, for meeting and chatting with visitors and peers within the Community Hall Artists in Residence series. From March, Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison will host discussions highlighting the protection of the local environment.

Collaborating with community organisations such as Multicultural Artis Victoria, Play It Forward, Arts Project Australia, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Australian Queer Archives, Community Hall gives all the opportunity to learn and grow with artists and designers in the heart of Melbourne’s art world.
