Melbourne lockdown to end October 21 with 10 home visitors allowed

Melbourne lockdown

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed that the world's longest lockdown will end Thursday October 21.

From 11:59pm this Thursday, the Melbourne lockdown lifts, with no restrictions on leaving your home and no curfew.

There will be no travel limit in metropolitan Melbourne, however no unauthorised visitors to regional Victoria will be allowed until the 80% threshold is hit.

10 visitors including dependants will be able to visit homes per day. It’s recommended they should be vaccinated, but that will not be enforced.

Public gatherings will be expanded to 15 people with vaccination no longer mandatory. Food and drink hospitality will resume with seated service with 20 vaccinated allowed inside, plus 50 outside.

There are 777 people currently in hospital, a small decrease on the day before, with 191 in intensive care. 90% of those in hospital aren’t fully vaccinated.

The total number of Victorians with at least one dose of a vaccine are more than 5 million.

“Today is the day to congratulate and thank every single one of those Victorians who’ve had at least one dose,” Daniel Andrews said.

“Pleasingly, we are predicted to pass through the 90% first dose barrier [either tomorrow or Tuesday].”

80% double dose vaccination statewide is expected around Melbourne Cup day, November 2, but it may be sooner. At that milestone, the remainder of the reopening roadmap will be implemented.

At 80% fully vaccinated, regional Victoria and Metro Melbourne come together under the same rules, which are currently as follows:

  • Up to 150 fully vaccinated people can dine indoors, and up to 30 can gather in public outside.
  • Indoor community sport open for minimum number required.
  • Masks are only required inside.
  • Pubs, restaurants and cafes can open for seated service only, up to 150 fully vaccinated people inside and 500 outdoors.
