The Great Melbourne Bagpipe Bash is calling all Victorian pipers to break a bagpipe world record for AC/DC.
The Great Melbourne Bagpipe Bash is coming to Fed Square on 12 November and needs your pipes.
Fed Square is rallying bagpipers across Victoria to gather for what could be a record-breaking moment in Melbourne’s music history. The Great Melbourne Bagpipe Bash aims to smash the current world record of 333 pipers playing simultaneously; a title Bulgaria has held since 2012.
Presented by Fed Square and backed by the City of Melbourne and ABC Radio Melbourne, this mass performance pays tribute to one of rock music’s most iconic visuals.

AC/DC’s It’s a Long Way to the Top music video from 1976 featured late frontman Bon Scott and the band jamming on the back of a flatbed truck rolling down Swanston Street, joined by three members of Melbourne’s Rats of Tobruk Pipe Band.
Director Paul Drane captured the moment for ABC’s Countdown, and the bagpipes became central to the song’s legendary status. Nearly fifty years later, as AC/DC returns to play the MCG, hundreds of pipers will recreate that spirit in the heart of the city.
Registration is open now for anyone keen to be part of history. School bands, individual pipers, community groups and supporters are all welcome, though ear plugs might be wise for spectators. Sheet music is available for download, so pipers can start practicing ahead of the big day. Whether you rock up in a kilt, school uniform or skinny jeans, the goal is simple: make noise, have fun and break a world record.
This celebration marks the start of Melbourne’s welcome back to AC/DC, bringing together the city’s piping community for an unforgettable performance. Warm up those pipes and get ready to create a moment that’ll echo through Fed Square and beyond.
