Melbourne Associations and Artists Share In Australia Council Grants

Of 24 national music associations who got funding, Contemporary Music Victoria, Multicultural Arts Victoria and the Association for Melbourne Jazz Presentation t/a Melbourne Jazz Co-Operative each received $50,000.

JOLT Sonic and Visual Arts Inc got $49,600, The Boite Inc $45,000 and Chamber Made Opera Inc $17,000.

Getting funds for New Works were Genevieve Lacey to compose a suite of 30 minutes for recorder, trumpet, harp, tape and live processing ($16,600), Kate Neal to create a vocal score for the music theatre work Permission to Speak ($15,000), Philip Samartzis for a one hour soundscape work An Absent Presence for radio broadcast on the ABC and France Culture ($13,000), Callum Moncrief to create new scores by the Eldritch Trio to accompany avant garde silent films ($11,673), Lucie Thorne to develop and record an album of new music with Hamish Stuart and Chris Abrahams ($8,250), Lucy Roleff to record, mix and master a new folk record ($6,050) and Nicholas Sowersby (pictured) to record and release a debut album as Sunbeam Sound Machine ($6,000).

In the Presentation and Promotion section, photographer Michelle Hunder got $27,369 towards a national tour of hip hop artists to support the release of her RISE photo book, JOLT Sonic and Visual Arts present a major series of orchestral works for this year’s Melbourne Festival ($25,800), La Compania Australia  for its 2015 subscription series ($21,600) and Rudely Interrupted to promote new releases ($13,524).

Australia Council is launching its new grants program next week at australiacouncil.gov.au.
