Melbourne’s artists have a new place to call home after the opening of the new Creative Spaces facility.

Melbourne’s artists have a new place to call home after the opening of the new Creative Spaces facility.

As part of a collaboration between the Coalition Government and the City of Melbourne, an old warehouse has become River Studios which will provide a new creative space for up to 75 people.

The West Melbourne studio has been set up for any and every artist on the scene including photographers, jewellers, writers, installation artists, multimedia artists, fashion designers, sculptors and painters.

The building has been created as part of the Creative Spaces program which was initially established as a website to help artists find space across Victoria, particularly in Melbourne. Now, the program has branched out into creating new studios, with River Studios, located across from the Footscray Community Arts Centre and covering 3000sqm over three levels.

The aim of the project is to make the new spaces affordable for local artists. Chair of the People and Creative City Committee, Councillor Jennifer Kaine, said “The River Studios faciility shows how a vacant building can be put to good use at a low cost, successfully turning a disused, wasted space into artist studios, while also contributing to the vibrancy and economy of our city”.

More information on the Creative Spaces program, as well as the new studio can be found on the Creative Spaces website
