Meet Via, the emerging R&B artist writing ballads that tug at the heartstrings

Words By Eva Marchingo

The Melbourne artist just dropped her new single, ‘Need From You’.

Melbourne-based artist Via is cementing her style with new single, ‘Need From You’. The song explores the difficult decision of leaving an unfulfilling relationship; it’s not just a song about heartbreak, it’s a self-care anthem about prioritising your feelings.

The song accurately depicts the end of a relationship: feeling as though you can’t go through the disappointment of being let down again and despite the relationship being over, there’s still the pull to find comfort in your ex.

Via says her lyrics are soul-baring and come straight from the heart.

“I was in a situation where I wanted to believe [the relationship] could be better and that I could be treated better and this person would give me better,” she says. “It gets to a point where you’re not seeing the reality of the situation anymore, you’re just presenting what you wish was happening.”

The rising R&B artist says songwriting helps her process her emotions even when she can’t quite articulate them herself.

“Writing songs is my therapy … Even when I don’t know how to explain it to someone, I can always write about it.”

‘Need From You’ is a window into the inner monologue of someone grappling with ending a relationship. The song is stripped back and bears an acoustic guitar as its centrepiece, but as the track builds, keyboard lines, percussion and other synth-led arrangements enter the fold.

Via’s sound continues to evolve – with every release she takes another step forward and her confidence continues to blossom. Growing up with an adoration for pop music, Via is coming to understand her talent extends beyond that.

“When I was younger, I was in love with pop ballads… all that slow, sad stuff used to help me process things. Then as I got older, I got really into R&B and soul,” she says. “I’ve been working on finding my sound, and this [song] is probably most indicative of where my music is going.”

‘Need From You’ was intended to part of a larger release, yet COVID-19 halted Via’s progress.

“I was meant to have an EP released and this song was going to be apart of it, but obviously since coronavirus happened, we couldn’t finish the EP,” she continues. “Rather than sit on it – because it’s probably one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written – I just rejigged the plan a little bit.”

Through earlier singles ‘Breathe Again’, ‘Real With Me’ and ‘Fears Came True’, we were introduced to Via’s affinity for heart-wrenching and raw lyricism. And ‘Need From You’ is no different – the song is honest and brave and sees Via vents her frustration with her heart on her sleeve.

“It’s so painful when you want somebody to be something for you and they can’t be … We can’t keep trying to make something work when it just clearly does not.”

‘Need From You’ is out now. Check it out here and find out more about Via at her Facebook page.
