Un-Editor’s Note

Once upon a time I thought I was going to be a writer. As an eager wannabe music journo in my first year of uni, I was introduced to Dan Watt who worked for Beat Magazine. I met Dan for coffee to ask his advice on how to break into such a competitive industry. “Just do it,” he said. Best $3.50 I ever spent. With the Nike slogan ringing in my ears, I started writing reviews of live shows and sending them to the editor. Soon I was published in Beat. I was pretty chuffed the day my first live review was published and again when I managed to land a position in the company.

I never did become a ground breaking music journalist. But I did find a place to work, full of quirky, lovable, accepting and amazing people that were as immersed in Melbourne’s music scene as I was and I was lucky enough to have a whole heap of laughs with them (including that infamous Kaiser Chiefs cover).

Many, many, many years later it’s time for me to move on. And it’s to all those wonderful people that I’d like to dedicate my final issue. Behind every word of this magazine is a team of passionate, dedicated and often exhausted people working their butts off and they deserve all the credit for keeping this mag alive.

So thanks to all the members of my Beat family, past and present, from the days of Jaymz Clements to Gloria Brancatisano and James Di Fabrizio. You are the best, I love you and I’m absolutely going to miss you.

Peace out. Lizzie Dynon (aka Emma Ghad)
