The five-time Tony Award-winning production of Charles Dickens' beloved tale returns to Melbourne for a strictly limited five-week season.

Lachy Hulme is stepping into Ebenezer Scrooge’s shoes for A Christmas Carol at Comedy Theatre in Melbourne.

Hulme, known for his work across film, television and theatre, takes on the iconic role of the cold-hearted miser who gets a supernatural wake-up call on Christmas Eve.

Australian audiences will recognise Hulme from his scene-stealing turn in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, his work with Melbourne Theatre Company on The Speechmaker, and his memorable role in Offspring. His portrayal of Sir Frank Packer in Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch Story earned him both a Silver Logie and an AACTA Award, proving he’s got the dramatic chops to bring Scrooge’s journey from miser to mensch to life.

Old Vic’s magical interpretation brings the classic ghost story to life with dazzling staging and beloved carols woven throughout. Four spirits guide Scrooge through past, present and future, showing him what a lifetime of greed could lead to and offering a chance at redemption before it’s too late.

Matthew Warchus, the creative mind behind Groundhog Day and Matilda the Musical, conceived and directed this production. Playwright Jack Thorne, who penned Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Enola Holmes, adapted the story for stage. Their collaboration has created something special that works for theatre-goers of all ages.

Expect to hear Joy to the World, Silent Night and It Came Upon the Midnight Clear alongside the heartfelt storytelling. This production has been celebrated around the world and will play in London, New York and Melbourne this year, making it a truly international festive tradition.

Additional casting announcements are coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled for more news about who’ll be haunting Scrooge this Christmas season.
