The first thing that leaps out at the listener after a listen to the five tracks on offer here is the sheer breadth of styles that are on the debut EP from the formerly-Perth, now Melbourne-based artist Kizzy. At her fingertips as a singer/songwriter/guitarist there’s blues and roots, country, pop, r’n’b, rock and more all going on across the disc, and it’s all very convincingly executed.

However, it’s probably her voice that is the central feature of this EP, despite her obvious stringed-instrument playing talents. It’s very easy on the ear, and also very versatile, sometimes displaying the fragility of a Casey Chambers, sometimes the feistiness of a Chrissie Amphlett. Her exceptional guitar skills, as good as they are, actually come across a lot better in a live setting however. Kizzy is an artist who must be experienced in both a recorded and a live format.

This EP has a home-made feel to it, but never seems amateurish at all. The sounds and overall musicianship are dead on the money, and the songs are simple, emotive and effective.

Kizzy shows great promise, and this writer will be watching her progress with interest. A great beginning to hopefully a long and successful career.
